Works for anything you set a temperature on: thermostats, heaters, heat pumps, air conditioning, boilers and water heaters. Drag the knob to change the target, which reads large in the middle, while a dot on the track marks the room’s temperature. The label follows the mode: Heat to, Cool to, Keep at, or Off. A switch in the header and a row of mode buttons appear when the device has them.

A strip under the dial says what the device is doing: heating, hot water, standby or a fault for a boiler that reports it, with water temperatures and the pressure (amber below 1 bar, red below 0.8); the status and a countdown for a cooker; heating or ready for a water heater. A plain thermostat shows none. On a tile two rows high there is no room for the dial, so you get the numbers with minus and plus buttons.
